Heard on NPR – Hapa is the Hawaiian word for half, and it’s often used to refer to someone of mixed race. Hapa is also the name of one of Hawaii’s most popular bands. Heard on NPR – In the early 1900s, thousands of Japanese women crossed the Pacific to marry Japanese plantation workers in Hawaii. Because those marriages were arranged through photographs and letters, the young women became known as “Picture Brides.” Their story is told in a new movie.
