Looking for something fun to do? Grab your family and friends, and your ukulele, and head on over to the 41st Annual Ukulele Festival happening today at Kapiolani Park Bandstand in Waikiki. Thousands of ukulele players from all over the world will gather to celebrate the music and joy created by the tiny four-stringed instrument. And it’s free. Hundreds of island children will perform, as well as guests from Italy, Thailand, Australia, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. As always, there’s a great line-up of talent from Hawaii, including Ohta-San and the group Hookena. Jake Shimabukuro will close out the show.
Heard on PRI’s The World – Each year, Hawaii’s Ukulele Festival attracts thousands of people from around the world. Lately, the instrument is seeing a resurgence, thanks in part to musicians like Jake Shimabukuro, who headlined the 40th Annual Ukulele festival.
Heard on NPR – Ever since Lyle Ritz recorded the world’s first jazz ukulele album more than 50 years ago, he’s been called the “Father of Jazz Ukulele.” He recorded his latest CD, “No Frills,” all by himself on his laptop computer, playing both ukulele and bass.
